Special Area World Scholars Cup Practice Test

Giant stone spheres in Central America are a hallmark of Costa Rica’s ancient landscape. These are the Diquís spheres, created by pre-Columbian communities in the southern Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica, and they’re famous for their impressive size and near-perfect round shape. They symbolize the region’s sophisticated without-writing social and ceremonial life, and the site where many of these spheres were found is celebrated as a UNESCO World Heritage location. Because the clue points to a Central American site built from huge round stones, Costa Rica’s giant spheres fit perfectly.

The other options come from different places or involve different kinds of monuments: the Hanging Gardens refer to a legendary Mesopotamian garden, the Nazca Geoglyphs are giant designs in Peru, and pyramids are iconic structures most associated with Egypt (even though pyramids exist elsewhere), none of which match the description of giant spherical stones in Central America.
